Abu Dawud 4/325. Muslim {Hadith no. 2018) says that one should mention the Name of Allah when entering the home and when beginning to eat; and that the devil, hearing this, says: “There is no shelter for us here tonight and no food”.
Jaabir (R.A.) narrates that Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) stated that when a man enters his home and makes Dhikr (remembers Allah) and also makes Dhikr at meal times, then Satan says to his colleagues that the night cannot be spent there nor can they partake of the peoples food and if no Dhikr was made on entering the house, then Satan says to his colleagues that they have an opportunity to spend the night there and if no Dhikr was made at meal times, then Satan tells his colleagues that they will be able to stay there and also get food. [Mishkat, Chapter on food]
The actual reason for reciting this dua is to ask Allah for His blessings. It is said that when a home is empty for a long time, one must recite a dua before entering it.
However, even if you are coming back from a market or a certain place, it is necessary for you to recite this dua for the sake of Allah.
A dua is the only way of communicating with the Almighty Allah. Dua is an Arabic word. The meaning of this word is a supplication or a prayer. That is why it is considered as the means of talking to Allah.
Allah has revealed a number of duas for all the Muslims so that the Muslims can ask Him for His blessings for the whole day in whatever they do! So, it is obligatory for every Muslim to make dua before eats, sleep, travels, goes out, or enters the home, etc.
