How to determine the direction using a sundial?
For this purpose, take a stick or any other vertical hard object of around 1 meter (3 Feet approx).
- Place that stick vertically on the ground, which is properly leveled, around 12 PM.
- Using the shadow of that stick, make a mark on the tip of its shadow.
- Now draw a line from the base of that stick to the marked tip.
- Make a round using this mark, which will work as a radius of this circle.
- Now, as the day passes by, The shadow of the stick will move, it will gain length and shorten again.
- Once the shadow of the stick touches the circle again, mark that point.
- Now connect the first mark with the second mark.
- The first mark is west, and the second mark is the east.
- Now draw a line across this west-east line, and you will get north-south line.
Method 3:
Using a Wrist Watch
For this purpose, you will need an Analog wrist watch. Follow the steps carefully.
If you are in the northern hemisphere:
- Hold the wristwatch in the palm of your hand horizontally.
- Place the hour hand towards the direction of the sun.
- The half way between the hour hand and 12 o’clock will be the south.
If you are in the southern hemisphere:
- Hold the wrist watch as discussed above.
- Place the 12 o’clock point towards the sun.
- The half way between 12 o’clock and the hour hand will be north.
Method 4:
Using a Compass:
This is a trusted method. It won’t tell you the exact direction of Mecca, But at least will tell you where north is.

- There are many apps, which you can download to your smartphone. These apps will tell you exact direction using your mobile GPS.
- The most efficient and trusted method is to go to internet. There are many websites which tells you the exact Qibla location using satellite maps. They even tell you the exact angles, where Qibla is located, anywhere from the world.
